Sunday, August 29 we took our first field trip! It was inspired by studying geology last year and working on a prehistoric unit throughout the summer. It was so fun to let them loose to actually find the things that they were a little bored about in anticipation for bigger things...like dinosaurs. It made it come to life to imagine Iowa under a shallow sea. They could hunt around and find brachiopods, gastropods, horn coral, peleycapods, and one bigger piece of colony coral. It was a lot of work to get up and down the loose rocky hills because many were very steep but it wasn't too hard to find a lot of fun pieces. The recent rain helped to uncover some before we arrived. The center was beautifully painted with murals and had an abundance of hands on exhibits about the things that live in Iowa. We didn't wander around the prairie as much but it was gorgeous, maybe next time! It was a fun time, we were the good kind of tired at the end of the day!
